Fishermen Perform Valuable Service to Offshore Wind Developer

NEW BEDFORD, MA – June 25, 2021 – Offshore Wind Farm Support is proud to announce the placement of seasoned, experienced and knowledgeable fisherman known as “Certified Fisheries Liaison Officer” onboard a Survey Vessel for Vineyard Wind

The survey vessel MINERVA UNO will be performing Geo-SubSea Survey operations in the southern/central portion of Vineyard Wind Lease Area (OCS – 0501). Vineyard Wind in developing an 800MW Offshore Wind Farm to ultimately power over 400,000 homes in Massachusetts. Vineyard Wind recognizes the importance, professionalism and necessity of being able to communicate directly with fishing vessels and mariners in survey area.  A CFLO is an experienced and highly trained fisherman who communicates in real time with fishermen and mariners, should the need arise

There are 17 different Offshore Wind Farms under development on the Eastern Seaboard of the USA and Vineyard Wind is one of four developers who recognize the importance of real time communication between fishermen and developers and all offshore survey vessels working for Vineyard Wind are required to have a CFLO onboard.

During the 2020 Offshore Wind Survey Season, our CFLO’s covered 114,000km of survey area with a little over 400 crossing situations and have ZERO negative interactions.

New for this 2021, our CFLO’s have undergone more training and are now cross trained as PSO (Protected Species Observers) to further enhance protection and observation of Marine Mammals 

  • Certified Fisheries Liaisons -have multiple years of experience. Virtually all of them began their fishing careers as “Greenhorns” and worked their way up to Captain
  • Our CFLO’s are well known and respected within the fishing community.
